On a warmer than usual evening in North Beach, a group of hungry friends happened upon a blue neon glow coming from Washington Square Park. The iconic Moose’s sign that used to shine brightly here has since been removed, being replaced by the names Joey & Eddie a couple years ago. Such changes, while unexpected, seem to reflect the neighborhood better with its family-style menu of Italian favorites like Spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parmesan, and seafood linguine.

Hearty portion sizes, rustic and straightforward dishes, and friendly service make Joey & Eddie’s a great choice for a relaxed meal with friends. While I do miss the old Moose’s sign, it’s nice to see the blue neon remains. |Joey & Eddie’s|

Being St. Patrick’s Day and all, it seemed appropriate to spend my Saturday celebrating over pints of Guinness and some pub fare. My friends decided upon Johnny Foley’s Irish House, a traditional Irish pub located near Union Square, for the festivities. Foley’s was surprisingly larger than expected with multiple dining areas and a separate bar in the rear dining room. There’s even a dueling piano bar located in the basement worth checking out. The food is best described as hearty pub fare with staples like fish & chips, bangers & mash, and sheperd’s pie, though I did see a curry dish on the menu as well. The menu’s various fried foods will usually pair nicely with any beer from Murphy’s Irish Stout to Chimay, both of which are available on tap. |Foley’s|

Following a late night movie at the Metreon, the search was on for a kitchen still open late on a Sunday. Luckily, the brightly lit florescent sign at Anna Belle’s caught my attention. Located in the Hotel Mosser, Anna Belle’s menu features local and sustainable American fare served until a half hour past midnight. The dinner menu features a range of hearty dishes such as the prime rib, pork chops, and short ribs, and the bar menu has plenty of fried foods, various pizzas, and a delicious burger. Diners looking for a casual meal can either opt for a high-top near the bar, or chose one of the tables in the more intimate main dining area. |Anna Belle’s|

It’s not often I recall actually dreaming about something I ate, but Pizzeria Delfina’s Margherita Pizza did exactly that. Sometimes it’s the simplest of ingredients that can make a lasting impression; mine came from the perfect combination of tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella, fresh basil and a thin Neapolitan pizza crust.

Inspired by eateries in Napoli, Pizzeria Delfina’s open kitchen and dining room is well lit, simple, functional, and modern. From the over-sized chalkboard menu by the door, to the large mural of the Bay Bridge by local Mission artist |Andre Karpov|, dining here feels inviting and cozy, just like a neighborhood pizzeria should be. Highlights of the meal also included the freshly stretched mozzarella, served with arugula, olive oil and some garlic toast, pairing nicely with the Peroni on draft. |Pizzeria Delfina|

Nettie’s Crab Shack

From tables adorned simply with brown butcher paper and a tall shaker of sea salt, to the weathered furniture and inviting Cape Cod decor; one step inside Nettie’s should conjure up memories of a charming seaside village somewhere in New England.

While they do serve some conventional New England fare such as clam chowder with bacon, warm lobster roll, steamers, and crab cakes; the rest of the menu features a diverse selection of comfort foods from various regions of the country. Southern specialties such as the Oyster Po’Boy, Seafood Gumbo, and grilled cornbread appear on the menu alongside a rendition of a Cioppino, minus the messy hands. The beer-battered fish & chips were juicy and flavorful as expected, and the fresh oysters were delicious. I liked the simple presentation of the steamer clams, served in a pale with a steamy herbal broth and a side of clarified butter. The inventive cocktails were tasty and the desserts were decadent and hard to resist. With crab season in full swing, try their Sunday local crab feed and get a whole dungeness crab either grilled, steamed or roasted from 5pm to 10pm. |nettiescrabshack|
