What started out as a local company that only made wallets is now a diversified brand that makes menswear, bags, sunglasses, watches, belts and accessories. All of their menswear, which includes shirts, blazers, jackets, and hoodies, are either made locally in Burlingame or by their tailors in New York City.

Their line of watches and sunglasses are mostly made in Italy and have this retro quality to them. Using Italian leather and waxed canvas for their line of bags and briefcases, the result is rugged yet sophisticated. Accessories include zanny cuff links, retro radios, even ipod cases. |Hlaska|

An acronym for Resident’s Apparel Gallery, this Hayes Valley boutique is just a couple blocks from the shops and restaurants on Hayes Street and has been in business since Blakely Bass opened the shop in 2002. RAG is a clothing cooperative and gallery that features over 70 local designers selling apparel, accessories, art work, designs for the home, and stationary.

The concept is simple: local designers can rent shelf space and consign their wares, promoting their brand and themselves with biographies and their individual logos to build a clientele. Part art gallery, part boutique, this 24th Street shop is the place to go to find unique art and fashion made by local artists and designers. Located in an emerging part of the Mission District, Wonderland SF is the brainchild of owner Irene Hernandez-Feiks, who opened the store to showcase the works of independent Bay Area artists and designers.

With its high ceilings, charming chandeliers, and unique art pieces displayed throughout the store, it’s a great setting for browsing the racks of apparel, accessories, jewelry, and handbags. It’s definitely worth stopping by on the first Thursday of every month for their art openings that are held in the store. |Wonderland SF|

Established in 2008, Duke & Duchess is a Hayes Valley boutique that specializes in their house label rugged denim, canvas bags, and locally designed apparel. The store also has a wide variety of sunglasses, key chains, belts, and accessories. Another cool item is their selection of graphic t-shirts sold in a can. With premium denim commanding high prices these days, it’s nice to still see styles that can be bought for less than $100 a pair. Their newest addition is their house brand of canvas bags that look sturdy, durable, and have a great vintage feel to them.

Conveniently located on one of the best streets for shopping, this store is a must visit while exploring the various boutiques and eateries on Hayes Street. Upon walking into the store, I was immediately struck by the cool rustic cedar paneling on the walls, the blown glass lighting fixtures, and the floor to ceiling wall shelves that work together to showcase their great products. |Duke & Duchess|

Conveniently located on Union Street, this Cow Hollow district boutique features a great selection of apparel, jewelry, and artwork made by emerging designers and artists. Since many of the designers are local, some of their collections are handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces, often limited in production. Best of all, the selection of new products updates on a regular basis, not once per season, so it’s worth while to stop in whenever you happen to be on Union Street. |Mingle Shop|

There are dress shirts and there are dress shirts, Cafe Coton makes the latter. Down the street from high profile retail shops by the likes of |Hermes| and |Prada|, this quaint little shop near Union Square is one of only a handful of US locations and is definitely worth a visit. The superior quality over other brands is noticeable in the way these fabrics look and feel; the fine Egyptian cotton comes in a wide spectrum of colors and patterns, and are styled with a European tapered fit with either French or button cuffs. There is even a choice of thread count, the highest of which features mother of pearl buttons, which are an unexpected luxury. In addition to shirts, Cafe Coton makes and sells silk knots, great ties, and very comfy boxers.
