Founded in Paris in 1961, Diptyque started out as an avant-garde fabrics and decorative art shop that also sold perfumed-scented candles. Their product line has since expanded over the years into personal fragrances of their signature scents and fragrance sprays for the home. The company also started selling body care products like lotions and bath products.
No one wants their own personal fragrance to be commonplace wherever they go, so it helps that the Maiden Lane shop is the only Diptyque store on the West Coast, and one of only three in the U.S. Though pricier than most fragrances sold at large department stores, the quality of their products over other brands is noticeable upon comparison. As reluctant as I am to divulge the exact scent I love and wear, Eau de Lierre is my favorite and is one of their newest and most complex fragrances to date.

Appropriate for nearly any occasion, a bouquet of some freshly cut Springtime flowers or a potted orchid in bloom is a perfect choice for a last minute gift. Wrapped in simple brown butcher paper and tied in place with a thick ribbon, the mix of colors from the bouquet are understated and elegant. If you’re going for something less cliche than roses or tulips, fragrant hyacinthus or something oversized like sunflowers and hydrangeas are a good bet. |Fiori|

For over forty years, San Francisco has celebrated the arrival of flowering cherry blossoms with a two weekend long celebration in the middle of |Japantown|. Originally a tradition in Japan called |Hanami| (flower viewing), celebrations there consist of outdoor parties and feasts amongst the blooming trees that can go on until the wee hours. Since the flowers typically only last a week or two on the tree, the cherry blossom is said to symbolize the fleeting beauty of life.
The parade on the last day of the festival begins at the Civic Center, travels down Post Street and ends at Fillmore Street. This year’s parade had its share of taiko drummers, Japanese Animation costume contest winners, and beauty pageant winners, not to mention some impressive |Matoi| twirling. At the tail of the parade, scores of people carrying large barrels of sake make offers of rice wine in anticipation of the staple crop planting season. The festival also features local merchants selling their wares and numerous food venders serving everything from BBQ to ramen noodles. |Nor Cal Cherry Blossom Festival|

Conveniently located on Union Street, this Cow Hollow district boutique features a great selection of apparel, jewelry, and artwork made by emerging designers and artists. Since many of the designers are local, some of their collections are handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces, often limited in production. Best of all, the selection of new products updates on a regular basis, not once per season, so it’s worth while to stop in whenever you happen to be on Union Street. |Mingle Shop|

Nestled between much taller buildings (the St Regis and the W Hotel), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s minimalist brick exterior and striped circular skylight, still make a dramatic statement. This |Mario Botta| designed structure, completed in 1995, feels right at home amongst the tall buildings that dot this part of the city.
Founded in 1935, the SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast completely dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The museum now boasts a collection of more than 26,000 pieces of artwork in various mediums. For a quick meal between exhibits, try |Caffe Musseo| near the front entrance or the the new rooftop coffee bar that pours |Blue Bottle Coffee|. Best of all, admission is free on the first Tuesday of every month.
The gallery below has some of my favorite pieces from a recent visit to the museum, copyright credits and more information on all of the SFMOMA’s permanent collection can be found here: |SFMOMA Art Scope|SFMOMA Museum Site|
