On a warmer than usual evening in North Beach, a group of hungry friends happened upon a blue neon glow coming from Washington Square Park. The iconic Moose’s sign that used to shine brightly here has since been removed, being replaced by the names Joey & Eddie a couple years ago. Such changes, while unexpected, seem to reflect the neighborhood better with its family-style menu of Italian favorites like Spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parmesan, and seafood linguine. Not far from the Powell Street cable car line turnaround, Pat’s Cafe is an unpretentious, charmingly small North Beach restaurant, best known for their brunch and breakfast dishes. I like this place for the neighborhood cafe feel, the personable service, and convenient North Beach location.
Let the tourists wait in line at all the crowded traps (i.e. Mama’s) around Washington Square; I’d rather not start my day with a hour plus wait just for some hearty breakfast. My favorites include the French toast, pancakes, and the scrambled eggs with cheese and chicken-apple sausages. The free Wi-Fi is a nice perk, and I heard they recently started dinner service. Indian food at an Irish Pub in a tony Italian district? Skeptics would say that sounds out of place, but this is San Francisco, so then again anything is possible.
Kennedy’s has a Bohemian feel, with some unexpected highlights such as its extensive list of great beers on tap, and of course the Indian fare, served until 2 am. Best of all, they deliver. The 2 for 1 drafts happy hour everyday from 5 pm to 7 pm, and a happy half-hour at 11 pm are added benefits. Read more »
