So I Married An Axe Murderer (1993)

Posted: February 5th, 2010 | Author: jklesure | Filed under: Movies | Tags: , , , , , | No Comments »

If asked what my favorite light-hearted comedy that happens to take place in San Francisco would be, I would have to say it’s the cult classic Mike Myers film from the early nineties: So I Married An Axe Murderer. With picture perfect backdrops such as the Telegraph Hill view from Mike Myers’ Filbert Street apartment rooftop, to the Painted Ladies of Alamo Square as the scene of a break-up, some of the most iconic views of the city that appear throughout the film add to the romance and drama.

Mike Myers plays a romantically challenged beat poet named Charlie (and also plays his very Scottish father Stuart). Charlie has a habit of breaking up with women for trivial reasons, such as an ex who smelled like soup or another that was an apparent kleptomaniac. This jadedness seems to change when Charlie meets Harriet (Nancy Travis), the proprietor of a butcher shop, their first encounter being when Charlie stops in to buy a haggis for his parents. Intrigue of meeting someone new sets in, and eventually the two hit it off, but mysteries surrounding Harriet’s past, which is strangely similar to a tabloid story of a female axe murdering husband serial killer at large could put a damper on the whole romance thing. |Watch the whole movie here for free|

Located on the corner of 24th and Castro in the Noe Valley district, Subs Inc. combines choice deli cuts, freshly baked bread, tomatoes, crisp iceberg lettuce and onions, all to create a satisfyingly delicious sandwich.

A good sandwich always starts with the bread, and Subs Inc. has some amazing Dutch crunch. Try it with their roasted turkey and cranberry sauce or their hot pastrami. The meatball sub is also delicious, perfect on a sweet roll. For dessert, there’s plenty of ice cream flavors to sample.

While the choices can be somewhat limited in the city for dine-in Chinese fare on the fancier side, look no further than R&G Lounge for deliciously authentic Cantonese cuisine. Located across the street from Portsmouth Square, the restaurant is only a few short blocks from the Financial District and North Beach, making it a convenient locale for a reasonably priced work lunch during the week. The restaurant features an extensive menu, though they are best known for their seafood dishes. Specialties would include their various preparations of Dungeness crab, my favorite being their Salt & Pepper style. Salt & Pepper Calamari is one of my favorite appetizers served here, as well as the honey-glazed spare ribs. |R&G Lounge|

It’s not often I recall actually dreaming about something I ate, but Pizzeria Delfina’s Margherita Pizza did exactly that. Sometimes it’s the simplest of ingredients that can make a lasting impression; mine came from the perfect combination of tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella, fresh basil and a thin Neapolitan pizza crust.

Inspired by eateries in Napoli, Pizzeria Delfina’s open kitchen and dining room is well lit, simple, functional, and modern. From the over-sized chalkboard menu by the door, to the large mural of the Bay Bridge by local Mission artist |Andre Karpov|, dining here feels inviting and cozy, just like a neighborhood pizzeria should be. Highlights of the meal also included the freshly stretched mozzarella, served with arugula, olive oil and some garlic toast, pairing nicely with the Peroni on draft. |Pizzeria Delfina|
